Terms of Service

1. Eligibility

You must be at least 4 years old to use the Service. If you are under 13, you must have verifiable parental consent. By using the Service, you represent that you meet these requirements.

2. Your Account

You may create an account using email/password, Sign in with Apple, or Sign in with Google. You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your credentials and for all activity that occurs under your account. You must provide accurate information when registering and keep it up to date.

We reserve the right to suspend or permanently terminate accounts that violate these Terms, without prior notice.

3. Community Contributions

Users may submit words, definitions, translations, and votes ("Contributions") to the Service. By submitting a Contribution, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to display, store, index, and distribute that content as part of the Somali language corpus.

All Contributions are subject to community voting and admin review. We may approve, reject, edit, or remove any Contribution at our discretion, including for quality, accuracy, or policy violations.

4. Prohibited Content

The following is strictly prohibited and will be removed without notice:

• Personal information about real individuals without their consent
• Hate speech or content targeting ethnic, religious, or other groups
• Deliberately false, misleading, or deceptive definitions
• Spam, automated submissions, or manipulation of voting systems
• Content that infringes any third-party intellectual property rights
• Any content that violates applicable law

5. Intellectual Property

The Afsoomali platform, including its design, branding, code, and original content, is owned by Yahya Qowle. The legacy dictionary data is sourced from the Somali NLP open dataset and remains subject to its original licence. Community-submitted content remains the property of the submitting user, subject to the licence granted in Section 3.

You may not copy, reproduce, distribute, or create derivative works from the Service without our express written permission.

6. Account Deletion & Data

You may delete your account at any time via Settings → Delete Account in the app. Upon deletion, your personal data (email, display name, User ID) will be removed within 30 days. Word contributions you submitted may be retained in anonymized form as part of the public dictionary corpus.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any dictionary content, including community-submitted definitions.

8. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Yahya Qowle and Afsoomali shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of or inability to use the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim arising under these Terms shall not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim (which for a free service is zero).

9. Third-Party Services

The Service uses Supabase for authentication and data storage, and may use Sign in with Apple and Sign in with Google. These third-party services have their own terms and privacy policies, which apply independently of these Terms. We are not responsible for the practices of third-party services.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. We will notify users of significant changes by updating the "Last Updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by applicable law. Any disputes arising from these Terms or your use of the Service shall be resolved through good-faith negotiation. If unresolved, disputes shall be subject to the jurisdiction of the courts applicable to the operator's location.
